上个月，在英语系八三级的微信同学圈里，熊晓杰博士转发了他自己的一篇博文《中国和美国之间只差一封邮件》，引起微信同学圈的热烈讨论。受同学们的委托，我将晓杰的博文翻译成英文，让罗梦安老师读懂中国学生对她的感恩和深深思念。
征得晓杰的同意，我将他的这篇博文和我的译文发表在“温哥华天空”专栏栏目上。
1983年秋季入学时，我和晓杰既是同班同学，又是室友。至今他记得我们寝室文学中，我讲过的一篇《小学教师启发式教学的故事》（我们寝室四位同学熊晓杰，万里，黄伟，祝翠轩之中，只有祝翠轩读过中等师范学校，当过三年中学老师，教过物理，地理和英语。寝室熄灯之前，大家总爱听他讲一些当老师时的逸闻趣事。）

晓杰的博文文笔流畅，情感真挚，对昔日青春岁月的回忆清晰欢快，对罗梦安老师的感激之情跃然纸上。我在上班之余，免为其力将晓杰的博文翻译成英文。才疏学浅，水平有限，我的译文远不及原文有文采和诗情。按照严复先生“信，达，雅”的翻译标准，我力求做到忠实和流畅。至于文学作品追求的”雅“，我推荐读者们阅读朱生豪先生翻译的莎士比亚的戏剧中文版，那才是”信，达，雅“译文的范本。

A Letter is Needed Between China and USA

2014年的某一天，我和家人开车去太阳新天地。路上，车里的音响正好在放Peter、Paul and Mary唱的《we shall overcome>》。它突然解封了冷冻在我心中几十年的好奇怪兽。
One day in 2014, I, along with my wife, drove to Sunny New Land. On the way I heard the English song, We Shall Overcome, sung by Peter, Paul and Mary. This song dissolved the frozen beast of curiosity within my heart for decades.
时光闪回到1983年。那时我们第一次离开熟悉的家乡，来到大城市的象牙塔。一切都是那么新奇和目不睱接。在这里，我们遇到了人生中的第一位美国老师。严格来说，是我们大多数同学近距离接触的第一个外国人。
Time flashed back to 1983, when I left my hometown for the first time and entered the ivory tower of the metropolis city. Everything seemed to be novel to me and I felt dizzying. In this city, I met with my first English teacher from the United States of America for the first time. Actually she was the first foreigner, with whom almost all of us had close contact.
而且她还是一位漂亮、文雅的女孩。那年她刚刚耶鲁毕业，加入雅礼协会（耶鲁-中国）的项目，到中国从事教育工作。中国对于她来说同样陌生。我们可以从她略显紧张的表情看出一个
比我们大不了几岁的美国女孩远渡重洋、身处异国他乡的陌生感。
Moreover, she was a quiet pretty girl. She participated in the program of Yale-China Association and came to China as a teacher. She was as unfamiliar with China as we were with Americans. We could tell from her nervous appearance that she revealed a kind of strangeness in a foreign country. Actually she was only a few years older than we were. She travelled all the way across the Pacific Ocean to China from USA.
她叫罗梦安。在那半年里，她的一切给我们留下了难以磨灭的印象。她被武汉的冬天冻得发红的鼻子；她坐在课桌上而不是座位上跟我们上口语课；她送给每位同学的小礼物（这些礼物甚至成为开启我们对时尚、现代生活印象的钥匙）；她给我们
每位同学取英文名字（很多同学直到现在还在使用着这些名字）；还有，她教我们唱的歌：《We shall overcome》、《Somewhere over the rainbow》 、《Row the boat》……
Her name was Mariam (Her full name is Mary Ann Rotondi). For half of the year when she taught us, she gave us an indelible impression. Her nose turned red with chilliness of winter in Wuhan; she taught us Spoken English Course by sitting on the desk rather than seating herself in the chair. She provided each of us with a small gift (These gifts served as keys to open the door for us to enter the world of fashion and modern lifestyle). She renamed each of us with an English name, which most of us have been utilizing till today). In addition, she taught us such English songs as We Shall Overcome, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Row the Boat….
我们其实并不理解这些歌的意义。直到若干年后我们广泛接触音乐和世界后才明白这些歌曲背后的价值。
In fact, we did not understand the meaning of those songs. We comprehended the value behind the songs after we obtained extensive contact with music and the world around us many years later.
那个时候，没有手提电话、没有呼机、没有电邮。老师与同学的关系也矜持地保持着距离。一年后她离开时，大家其实很不舍。但是，居然也没有人想到或有勇气做些特别的事来表达我们对她的好感和不舍。大家心潮澎湃，表情平静地从此别过。
In that period, we did not have any cell phones, pagers or emails. The foreign teachers and their students maintained a certain kind of distance between them. When Mariam left Wuhan one year later, none of us were courageous enough to convey our attachment to her although we all aspired her to stay with us. We seemed to be calm at least on our facial expressions when we said goodbye to Mariam. As a matter of fact, we were emotionally unbalanced.
从此，30年过去了。她消失在我们的世界。她就像一个外星人。机缘巧合降落在地球，给接触过她的人带来巨大冲击后，突然消失，无影无踪。
Since then, thirty years have passed away and Mariam disappeared from our world. She seemed to be an alien, who chanced to land on the earth, bringing with her a formidable shock to the people with whom she had kept close contact, and then vanished.
我偶尔会想起她。尤其是当我们唱起或听到那些歌的时候。而且，在我心中一直有一个预感，就是有朝一日我们一定会再次相见。
Her image occurred to my mind occasionally when we sang or listened to those songs. I had the premonition that I would meet her again somewhere and some day.
