           MAINTENANCE IN PROGRESS                  维修正在进行之中

                   DO NOT ENTER                                  不得入内

安全须知

灭火器

紧急时候使用

这个标牌几乎每个天铁站都可以见到。

本来Safety跟Security是同一个意思,两个词叠加连用,有三个目的:

      一是为了强调,引起旅客足够的重视;

      二是为了押首韵,读起来朗朗上口;

      三是为了美观,对称均衡。

extinguisher是灭火器的意思,这个词对应的动词是extinguish,有”扑灭,使......熄灭“的意思。

口语中,常常用put out fire,表示“灭火”的意思。

in the event of 与in case of是一个意思,指“在......的情况下”,后面跟名词。

in the event of是比较正规的用语,一般用于严肃庄重的场合,在法律文书中出现频率较高。

in case of 通常用于非正式场合。

下面的几个标牌,就请大家猜一猜它们的意思。

纠正:改put off fire为put out the fire, 经过google上quaro - 查证,深深致歉   7年前
  复制在此,为证:   The thing with English is that certain words ‘collocate’ with others and result in non-literal meaning; you could also call them idioms for this reason. The correct choice here is “to put out a fire”. That said “put out” means to extinguish or stop something. e.g. “We need to put out the fire before it spreads to the kitchen.” or “You need to let him off the hook and tell him that you’re not interested; it’s time to put him out of his misery.” “Put off” means a. to respond evasively e.g. “She meant to put-off the reporter by giving monosyllabic responses.” b. it is used to describe something that is very unpleasante.g. “The perfume he wears is such a put-off for me.” c. to postponee.g. “I don’t want to put off buying those shoes; they may go out of stock very soon!”. Cheers!1.6k ViewsRelated QuestionsMore Answers Below Is it safe to pee on a fire to put it out?What do we use to put out a fire?How come wind both feeds a fire and puts it out?Why do we put water in where the fire spread?Why does covering with a blanket put out fire?Ask New QuestionAmeer AliAmeer Ali, Language Expert,SoftSkills Book Author, Empowerment Trainer.Answered Oct 10, 2017 · Author has 315 answers and 406.1k answer views“To put out” the fire means to extinguish the fire or stop something from burning. “To put off ” the fire means to delay or postpone the fire to a future time. No parking 禁止停车 No smoking 禁止吸烟 - 里面还有更多例子   7年前
 类似的表达还有     No littering  禁止乱扔废物     No loitering  禁止逗留     No spitting   禁止吐痰     No soliciting  谢绝推销     No panhandling   禁止行乞 这种结构的特点是  No + V-ing, 就是说,后面的动词需要加上ing, 使这个动词变成动名词。 当然,No + noun (名词)  也是正确的,比如:      No entry   不得入内      No worries  别担心      No rush   不用急      No hurry  不用赶忙      No pains, no gains.   没有幸苦,就没有收获。

Defamation is an area of law that provides a civil remedy when someone's words end up causing harm to your reputation or your livelihood. Libel is a written or published defamatory statement, while slander is defamation that is spoken by the defendant. I am serious. I am not kidding. I will file a lawsiut against this guy if he refuses to apologize to me in public within two weeks. Wait and see.
