Fun when it works but difficult to get connected

Fun when it works but difficult to get connected
The box of the Harry Potter Coding Kit claims you can “Build a Coding Wand” and “Learn to Code”. Not counting the two AAA batteries, which are included, there are a total of three pieces to assemble, one of which is essentially a battery case cover, so “Build a Coding Wand” seems to really be stretching the truth. The “Learn to Code” claim holds truer as the app, once you can get into it, does offer visual coding blocks similar to Scratch. We had a bit of an ordeal getting the Kano Code app to work with the wand. While the box claims that the wand “works with most tablets”, we could not install the Kano Code app on our iPad as it only works with iOS 11.0 or higher. We then tried to use it with a brand-new Kano Computer. While the app comes pre-installed, we could not get the computer to see the wand via Bluetooth. The computer could see other nearby Bluetooth-enabled devices. Next, we tried an Android phone. We were able to download and install the app, and connect to the wand with Bluetooth. When we opened the app, we were prompted to update the wand firmware, which we did. After the firmware was updated, we tried to connect the wand again to the Kano Computer, but to no avail. The Android app was designed with tablets, not phones, in mind and the scale makes it entirely unusable. We did manage to install the app on a laptop with Windows 10 Home installed. We were finally able to see the app the way it was intended. A nine-year-old was the primary user of the app, and she found it fun, and easy to use. The next day, we re-opened the app but it could not find the wand. We had to go to Settings in the Windows OS and manually connect the wand in Bluetooth, and then restart the app to get it to connect. When everything works, it works well, but it was a frustrating experience getting it set up. It was especially irksome not being able to use it with a device made by the same company. The nine-year-old feels it is worth a 4 out of 5. As the adult who is fighting to make a seemingly simply device work, however, I would give it a 2.5 out of 5.

Completely useless. You have to sign up to Kano World in order to be able to use the wand, but it is impossible to do so, you invariably get error messages. The help section doesn't load because it's not secured (kind of sketchy coming from a tech company) and there are no other ways to reach anyone. The seller is not much help either. When I asked to return the kit (before I knew it was impossible to use) they told me I had to pay for shipping, even though they were the ones responsible for sending me the wrong version. They offered me a 50% refund that I accepted, since the shipping costs would've been close to that amount anyway, but I still got screwed because it's unusable. I suspect they were aware of the kit's disuse since it is sold directly from the kano store. A very unhappy costumer.

he played with it for 30 min and he hasn't touched it since.

If I could give this product a zero, I would! I watched reviews on YouTube before buying, and the product seemed to have decent reviews; there were some reports of minor app glitches, but that's normal for any digital product. I checked several of our devices for compatibility before deciding to buy, and it appeared that both my MacBook Air and my son's Samsung Galaxy Book would work. My son opened this on Christmas morning and was so excited to get it set up! We got the app downloading on his computer while he built the wand and this is where the disappointment kicked in. We opened the app and were quickly prompted to choose a username; my son typed one in, "username invalid." no big deal, try another one, "username invalid", ok lets try a suggested one, "username invalid".... So I decided to go to the Help site from the instruction book, website doesn't exist. I decided to try it on my Macbook and the app crashed the second I opened it! So I restart my computer and try again, NOPE instantly crashes again. Then I discovered the Kano code website and thought ok lets try to make an account there, NOPE "username invalid" Maybe its the web browser, I tried safari and chrome on my MacBook, edge and chrome on my son's PC and safari on my iPhone... all said "username invalid"... the disappoint kicks in even more; I said let's leave it for a few days and I'll call the number on the 27th.... I tried calling the US phone number in the manual and got a condo rental complex, thinking I dialed wrong I try the number again, NOPE, I dialed correct! I tried googling to find a new number and found nothing; so I sent the company a detailed email describing the problem I was having and everything I tried and received no response. I've also tried all of the above several times over the past few days to see if they had fixed the problem and still have had zero success!

Editing to add that I’m having troubles trying to return the product as I suspect the seller knew the product was defective! I’ve tried twice now with no response, and had to call Amazon yesterday to escalate my claim. Seriously DO NOT BUY!!!!

Bought this as a Christmas present- VERY disappointed that the seller sold a product that doesn’t work. Reviews prior to Christmas were good, said many had been purchased in the prior month. Arrived quickly and was in perfect condition- however once opened and tried to connect wand to the app- the app doesn’t work. You are unable to create an account- I now have a VERY disappointed child whose Christmas present doesn’t work. Seller has been contacted for refund. Never had a negative experience until now.

This was the closest thing that Santa could find to a real magic wand that was requested by my 7 year old daughter. And my daughter was impressed by Santa this year!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent coding introduction for the HP obsessed.

This was bought as a Christmas present for a ten year old; mainly because they are obsessed with Harry Potter and the chance to combine that with something educational was too good to pass up.

It comes nicely presented and starts with a wonderful page by page guide to assemble the wand, explaining the PCB and it’s sensors. This really helps build an experience of what’s happening. From there you’re guided to install the Kano app to your tablet (more on that below). From there it’s into a Scratch style development environment but nicely wrapped in a gamified experience based on Harry Potter combined with the various capabilities of the wand. It’s really well done and the Harry Potter stuff is integrated well - not just a simple skin over a generic app.

If you’ve ever seen Scratch you’ll be right at home - the coding aspect is a drag and drop graphical interface. It supports the usual loops, conditions and so on while integrating with the Wand and it’s capabilities really well. So for example moving the wand in a particular motion to trigger a set of events in the app (like making a broomstick hover).

It’s worth bearing in mind that this needs a tablet (or a laptop) to work. I’m using a Kindle Fire 10 HD which is okay but it’s a bit slow at times. I wouldn’t want to use any of the smaller Kindle Fires. I’ve not used it on an iPad but as they tend to be faster devices, I suspect you’ll get a better experience on these.

This is really well done and one of the highlights of our Christmas. Yes, it’s a little on the pricey side but from a value point of view it’s top notch. Top marks.

This coding kit app to support the wand has been discontinued worldwide. No one should be selling this.
It arrived for my son's 10th birthday with great excitement. We spent time putting it together then searched the apps to use it. Kano app no longer exists.
Absolute fail. They are even suing Warner Bros.
We spent hours searching for any way to use this overseas as well, to discover that the coding kit is useless worldwide.

I bought this wand as a present a 9 year old and am delighted with it! Opening the box had a real wow factor for both my niece and myself (she loved the spells poster and the stickers - very nice touch). We have spent the past week going through all the coding challenges which start quite basic and then get progressively more challenging..you can even look at the javascript coding. She absolutely love the Kano World section of the app where she could look at and play other kids creations.
As I am a computing teacher - I have asked my school to consider purchasing a class set I loved it that much! I think the design of the challenges are very well thought out with key computing concepts covered in a really fun and engaging manner. I brought the wand into school and played over break with a few of the boys and there were quite a few "I want one for Christmas" comments. Loved it!
